Afeganistão é maior produtor mundial de maconha, diz ONU

Provedor de 90% do ópio -a matéria-prima da heroína- do mundo, o Afeganistão tornou-se também nos últimos anos o maior produtor de maconha, que é cultivada em 17 de suas 34 Províncias, segundo relatório do UNODC (agência antidrogas da ONU) revelado ontem.
Com a produtividade por hectare mais de três vezes maior que a do Marrocos -outro grande produtor-, o país é responsável por colocar de 1.500 a 3.500 toneladas da droga por ano no mercado mundial.
Segundo o UNODC, o cultivo da planta se estende por entre 10 mil e 24 mil hectares, sobretudo na conflagrada região sul afegã, alvo de ofensiva da Otan -a aliança militar ocidental- por conta da predominância de insurgentes ligados ao Taleban.
"O relatório mostra que o problema da droga no Afeganistão é mais complexo do que o tráfico de ópio", disse Antonio Maria Costa, chefe do UNODC. Como no caso do ópio, o tráfico de maconha financia a insurgência, que cobra taxas de produção e permite o trânsito seguro da droga pelo país.

Are Nut Bans Promoting Hysteria? Worries about nut allergies are intense in some circles. (Lars Klove for The New York Times) Every parent of a school-age child has heard the warnings about nut allergies. Some schools ban nuts entirely, while others set aside special nut-free tables. Parents are often quizzed about the ingredients and preparation methods for birthday treats they send to school. One parent told me she was asked whether a clean knife used to cut brownies had ever been used to spread peanut butter. While nut allergies are clearly a risk to some children, often the response to this health concern represents “a gross overreaction to the magnitude of the threat,” argues Dr. Nicholas A. Christakis, an internal medicine doctor and professor at Harvard Medical School, in a recent column in the British medical journal BMJ.
