IMAN

IQONS: What is the most memorable moment of your modeling career?

Iman: When Mr. Yves Saint-Laurent asked me to be his house model for one couture collection that he called African Queen.... everything was fitted on me from fabric and cut and styled on me. I will forever treasure Mr. Saint Laurent choosing me as his inspiration for that season and famously having said: "My dream woman is Iman.... Perfection. Her face. Her body."

IQONS: What was your first impression of the whole fashion world when modeling for YSL, etc?

Iman: Exciting, Exhilarating... on those days we were muses as they asked us if we liked the clothes, how we would wear it, etc.... Thierry Mugler, Claude Montana and Jean Paul Gaultier were "l'enfant terrible" on those days creating mayhem and excitement. The shows were like a circus... 3 rings of absolute madness and fabulousness. They used animals ... i remember carrying a baby monkey in one show and a baby lion on a leash on another. In fashion they made you walk a tight rope - in stilettos.

IQONS: Did you feel you were playing a major role as the first African model to be featured on a Vogue Cover?

Iman: I was not the first [African] model! But I sure did break boundaries and open doors by being the first black model to get lucrative advertising campaigns from Calvin Klein, Donna Karan, Valentino, Versace, YSL etc....

IQONS: What do you think of models now? What changes would you like to see?

Iman: First and foremost I would like to see more of multicultural models on the runway whether they are Black, Hispanics or Asians..... they are becoming less and less. Also, I would love to see the personality of the models... they are truly mannequins these days!

IQONS: What is the best and worst thing about being married to David Bowie?

Iman: All is good..... he is the coolest man in the whole wide world.

IQONS: What do you dream about? Any recurring dreams?

Iman: Sunsets are always there... I don't know what it means.

IQONS: If you could have any moment in your life over again, what would you do differently?

Iman: I would not have traveled as much for work when I was a young mother.

IQONS: What is your proudest moment?

Iman: Giving birth to my 2 daughters

IQONS: Tell us 5 things you like in no order. The first 5 that come to your mind...

Iman: Breathing room, lying around reading with my husband, sunrises, Bali, massages

IQONS: If you were an animal, which one would you be?

Iman: A dog with a happy, wealthy family

IQONS: How do you think other people perceive you?

Iman: Strong and confident.

IQONS: How does that differ from how you perceive yourself?

Iman: Not so sure about myself

IQONS: What is your most prized possession?

Iman: My wedding band

IQONS: Tell us anything about David Bowie

Iman: He's cool, stylish, kind and hysterically funny.

IQONS: What are your thoughts on being a CEO and founder of a cosmetics company

Iman: It is not what it is cracked to be. It's a tough job.

IQONS: What would you like to share about your involvement with Keep a Child Alive?

Iman: As the Global Ambassador of Keep a Child Alive it is my duty to inform the public of the work that we do which is to provide life saving ARV drugs for families and children affected with AIDS in Africa. Our motto is so powerful.... ONE DOLLAR A DAY SAVES A LIFE. Can you come up with a better way to use one dollar than giving LIFE? Please, help and donate to www.keepachildalive.org

IQONS: What question do you have for the members of IQONS?

Iman: What makes one an icon?

IQONS: What would you call a film about your life?

Iman: Spiraling Upwards

IQONS: What can Iqonians give to you as a gift?

Iman: A donation to Keep a Child Alive.... or drawings.
